William O. Kirkman - 71

Muncie - Muncie-William O. Kirkman, 71, well known retired Muncie Police Officer, died Tuesday afternoon, June 29, 2010, in Ball Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.

He was born in Muncie, the son of Nelson O. and Iris Marie (Stewart) Kirkman, graduated from Muncie Central High School, class of 1956, later attended Ball State University, served with the National Guard, and spent most of his life in this area.

Mr. Kirkman served with the City of Muncie on the Muncie Police Department for twenty-five years prior to his retirement as a Captain. Following his retirement, Bill served as an investigator with the Delaware County Prosecutors Office for two years, and with the Building Commissioners Office of the City of Muncie for fifteen years, serving as Interim Commissioner at one time.

Mr. Kirkman was a member of Gethsemane United Methodist Church, where he served as a board member, Fraternal Order of Police, #87, Delaware Lodge #46, F. & A.M., and the Scottish Rite Valley of Ft. Wayne.

Surviving are his wife of forty-one years, Rebecca (Becky) Kirkman; three children, Shelley Ann Kirkman, Eric David Kirkman (wife, Jodie), and Melinda Michele Kirkman; his sister, Maralyn Joan Bartlett; his brother, Richard Kirkman (wife, Carolyn); seven grandchildren, Adam, Justin, and Eric Parker, Sarah, Hannah, Kenya, and Seth Kirkman; four great grandchildren, Taylor, Lillian, Sidney, and Kaleb Parker; his best friend, Donnie Mullinix; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Janice Ellison, and a brother Robert Kirkman.

Services will be held at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel, 10 a.m. Saturday, July 3, 2010, with Rev. Martha Lyons officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery, north of Muncie.

Family and friends may call at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory from 4 until 8 p.m. Friday or one hour prior to service time on Saturday. Memorials may be directed to the Gethsemane United Methodist Church, 1201 W. McGalliard Road, Muncie, IN 47303 or the American Cancer Society, 1220 Meridian, Anderson, IN 46016. Ann Austin - So very sorry to read about Bill. Pat Rollins had told me he had been sick. I am in Indy with Audrey in the hospital. We have been here since June l5. She is not being released anytime soon, so I will not be able to attend the calling hours or the service. We had so many fun times dancing. I will always remember his laughter and his dancing. So many fond memories. I'm thinking of you.

I am so sorry we were unable to be at the service, it is just still too soon for us. However, please know that if you should need anything at all please let us know. These next few days and weeks always seem so uncertain but know that God will comfort you. May God bless you all and keep you close to him, just as Bill is. Always thought so much of him. It was obvious just how much he loved his family.

Glen Wheat - Bill was one of the Officer's whom I looked up to when I was one of the new guys. We were on different departments but Bill's presence and dedication was known to all of us. Bill was an Officer's Officer. Never wavering in his duty, he instilled a sense of commitment and honor to other Officers. His service was one to emulate and follow. Rest well Brother Bill and know we stand with your family in this time of sorrow.

We hope that the memories and love you shared with Bill will comfort you during this difficult time I still remember the time when I was young and thought there was someone trying to get in our house while my parents were gone and he came over and looked around for me. He was always a hero, and helped everyone out. My parents knowing you as neighbors and friends--our memories are with us always--and their were many happy childhood memories in our neighborhood. My parents have both passed as well....and although their physical presence is not with us, their emotional closeness with be with us always.
